About the Coach
“Will you marry me?”
My boyfriend’s question came with one beautiful, terrifying detail: his 8-year-old daughter.
How hard could it be? I thought. This sweet little girl adored me and was begging her dad to make me into her mother. And, in December 2016, he did just that.
It didn’t take a month to learn my answer: it could be hard. Very hard. On the way home from our honeymoon, my husband and I got into the first of many explosive arguments about my new stepdaughter. In the following weeks, I watched my sweet little girl turn jealous. Manipulative. Deceptive.
My heart broke for her. She was quickly learning I wasn’t the Disney-fairy tale dream she’d had for years. My heart was also breaking for myself: how was I going to survive the daily battle of making this family work and maintain my mental health at the same time?

I’ll bet you can relate. You’ve probably felt the pain of sharing yourself with your stepchild, only to watch her fight your every step, demand more resources than you have, and worst of all, try to drive a wedge between you and your partner.
There was hope for me, just like there is for you. After eight years in this wonderful, chaotic family, I grew my step-mom muscles. My stepdaughter now attends college, my husband and I are still in love, and we share two little ones of our very own.
What about you? What are your dreams and struggles with your stepdaughter? You’re not alone on this road. Together, we can develop the vital skills you need for navigating your unique challenges. Who knows? You may even learn to dodge some of the tears and regrets I collected on my own journey. What do you say - ready for a step-mom sidekick?
